Appian: (Davies, John, trans.:)
The History of Appian of Alexandria, in two parts. The first consisting of the Punick, Syrian, Parthian, Mithridatick, Illyrian, Spanish, and Hannibalick Wars. The Second containing five books of the Civil Wars of Rome... The third edition.
London: Printed for John Amery at the Peacock, [...], 1679 Folio, 2 parts in 1, pp. [xiv], 251, [i], 273, [ii]. Title in red and black, woodcut initials and ornaments. First and last four leaves a bit browned and dampstained at margins, title frayed at fore-edge, light age browning throughout, occasional slight marginal foxing, 2B2-3 soiled, long clean tear from fore-edge of 4h2 extending along blank margin. Contemporary full calf, single blind ruled, rebacked with original spine onlaid, scattered loss to covers from binding acid. Modern bookplate of Fox Pointe Collection to front pastedown. The first edition of the second English translation of Appian of Alexandria's important 'Historia Romana'. Written in the 2nd century AD, it spans the origins of Rome to the end of the Republic, with a detailed account of the Civil Wars, which here constitutes the second part. This translation, originally attributed to John Dryden, was produced by John Davies (1627-93) of Kidwelly. After studying at Oxford and Cambridge, and spending some time in France, he was employed by London booksellers as a translator from Latin and French. This copy was in the Fox Pointe Manor Library, a rich collection of 17th-century English imprints gathered by Dr Howard Knohl. ESTC R13368; Hoffmann I, 280.

Appian; Horace White, ed.
Appian's Roman History
Cambridge, Massachusetts / London, England, Harvard University Press / William Heinemann, . Reprint Edition. Hardcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. Appian (Appianus) was a Greek official of Alexandria, Egypt, and who directly observed the Jewish rebellion of A.D. 116. He later became a Roman citizen and was knighted for his efforts and became a keen observer of and loyal to various Roman Emperors and other officials. He died during the reign of Antoninus Pius (Emperor, A.D. 138-161) (publisher's blurb). Though his entire oeuvre is unavailable currently, many books having been lost, his works devoted to Roman political and military history are quite well developed here in the Loeb Classical Library stable. Sharp little set of the four volumes, complete, that comprise Appian's history of Ancient Rome. Bilingual in English, with Greek language, facing, and paginated consecutively. Bound handsomely and simply in a creamy green cloth over boards, sharp and distinct lettering to spine and with the publisher's "LCL" logo stamped sharply onto front covers. Bright and shiny printed dust jackets, illustrated, little worn but three jackets are price-clipped, a bit of rubbing here and there, else quite attractive, two lightly sunned. From the personal library of the noted English historian of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, Professor Peter Morris Green, now of Iowa City, Iowa, 99 years old, nearly blind, but still working, in this case on a new translation and with annotations, of Herodotus, his favorite historian. Volume I (1972): xii [1], 2-647 pp.; Volume II (1972): frontis matter, 2-467 pp.; Volume III (1979): frontis matter, 2-567 pp.; Volume IV (1979): frontis matter, 2-683 pp. Each volume concludes with an eight-page list of other titles in the Loeb Classical Library stable.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
